Campbell Clinches Championship with Consistency
By: Devon Holder
Wyoming, Michigan driver, Brian Campbell, claimed the 2009 ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division Championship at Memphis Motorsports Park in The King’s Ransom O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 presented by Suncoast Plastering. Campbell finished 30th at Memphis after suffering his only DNF of the 2009 season when his engine failed 100 laps into the race. “It has been a great year,” said Campbell after the race. “This is our only DNF of the year. We won this championship with a lot of consistency. We did have a problem with our Phil Harper motor but we have been running this girl to death all year long and Phil told us we needed to freshen it up, so we can’t blame it on him.”
Campbell, who has a reputation of being at the front of the field near the end of the race, had to watch the final 200 laps at Memphis from the pit area. Fortunately, Campbell knew that by taking the green flag, he would have accrued enough points to claim the championship regardless of the race’s outcome. Even though Campbell was not on the race track, there was a celebration amongst his Perfect Circle/Boyne Machine team down in the pit area that was well deserved by the most consistent driver of the 2009 ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division season.
Campbell had an average finishing position of 7.67 in his championship season. This is absolutely remarkable when you notice that he finished 18th at Iowa and 30th at Memphis in the final two events of the year. Prior to Iowa, Campbell’s average finish was 3.0 through seven events. Campbell collected one victory at O’Reilly Raceway Park, and claimed three runner-up finishes. In nine starts, Campbell had 6 top five’s and 7 top ten’s. Consistency was definitely the key to his championship in 2009.
“I have to thank all the guys on the crew and Perfect Circle Racing,” continued Campbell. “This is a great feeling.” Campbell plans on coming back to defend his ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division Championship in 2010, along with running some other events. “We are going to do some big motor racing, defend our championship in the ASA Late Model Series, run some outlaw races up in Michigan, and probably do a little more racing next year than we did this year.”
